Sharing the Bridesmaid Costs

Picture this: one of your best friends approaches you and asks you be one of her bridesmaids—lucky you! You are so caught up in the moment that before you can even begin to think about the hefty expenses coming your way, you happily agree. While being hand-selected to stand in as a bridesmaid is exciting and quite an honor, it unfortunately comes with a price. However, with a little creativity and group collaboration, it is possible to make the most out of your experience and keep some money in the bank.

In 2011, the average bridesmaid shelled out nearly $1,696. From the bridesmaid dress to travel expenses and everything in-between, your bridesmaid tab could easily rack up if you are not careful.

So how do you find a sensible balance? Think about splitting the costs with other ladies in the bridal party, of course! According to bridalguide.com, there are five easy ways you can save cash as a group:

o    Share a suite. Open suites are spacious, upscale rooms that usually sleep four people. This might cost $200 a night, but with four of you splitting it, that’s $50 apiece! Some suites offer two double beds and a sleeper sofa, so you could fit five people in a room very comfortably. If you and a date are going to the wedding, split a room or suite with another couple, and spend just $100, which may be less than what the other guests are spending on their standard hotel rooms.
o    Share travel fares. While it’s common for guests to travel for destination weddings, many airlines offer group discounts for weddings groups of 10 or more people. Although it may take some extra planning and coordination, the payoff would be worth it—think of the hundreds of dollars you could be saving!
o    Share a ride. If the wedding destination isn’t very far (~1-2 hours), think about sharing a ride! For many bridesmaids, this ride starts the wedding weekend fun. Enjoy a friendly ride, stop for lunch and save on gas and tolls.
o    Group DIY-ingDIY favors and menu items for the shower or décor and printed items for the wedding is a great way to personalize the event and save some money. Pick up some cupcake décor supplies, vases, crystal accents, gift baggies and other supplies at the craft store, and split the cost. Then, head to a bridesmaid’s home to enjoy a glass of wine or coffees and teas, snack on appetizers or desserts and whip out those gifts for the bride and groom.
Remember that bigger doesn’t always mean better. Going broke or dealing with debt isn’t fun, nor is it worth it in the long run. Beware of sneaky, little expenses—I promise you’ll be so happy in the end!
