Re-Wear Your Bridesmaid Dress to be Style Fab All Over Again

Spending a whole month’s salary on a dress typically doesn’t really result in a happy post-bridesmaid, especially if the dress is only going to be worn once.  Most bridesmaids tend to believe that the dress they wear for their friend’s big day is only set to be worn that ONE day.  Well, we at Blushing Bridesmaids have another thing coming for ya.  Think twice about tucking your dress into the back of your closet (or in the case of 27 Dresses, making a whole closet just for bridesmaids dresses) and get creative and fashionable with Blushing Bridesmaids’ post-bridesmaids dress wedding tips and tricks!

Depending on the dress, and how you feel about it, there are plenty of options on what to do with your dress, even after the bouquet has been thrown.

  1. Keep It?

    • Before deciding to significantly change or get rid of the dress outright, decide if it could be worn for any other event in the future. Many bridesmaid's dresses can be worn with different accessories and be used for another formal occasion or as a cocktail dress. Decide if your dress might be paired with a sweater, jacket or tights and different shoes to suit a different purpose.
If you feel that you will be able to wear your dress again in some capacity, consider getting it cleaned after the event. It is usually a good idea to bring a formal dress to the dry cleaners after it is worn, in order to keep it in good condition for wearing again. Some dry cleaner's specialize in preserving formal dresses, so if you wish to wear it again, consider bringing it to a specialist.

    Change It?

    • If your dress is not the type of dress that you believe you will be able to wear again, you might consider wearing it with a few alterations. Most dresses can easily be hemmed into more wearable lengths. Sleeves can often be removed, and sometime necklines can be changed, too. A more formal and fuller skirt can also be taken in for a slimmer and less formal fit. At the very least, you might want to take the dress to a seamstress to see what basic alterations she could recommend for the dress, and what the cost would be to perform them. You might be surprised to find an entirely new dress that is now wearable.

    Get Rid of It?

    • If you know there is no way you will ever wear the dress again, then you should consider selling or donating it. Try selling it to a thrift or consignment shop. Many consignment shops will give you a share of the profits if the dress sells, and they will let you have it back if it doesn't sell after a stated period of time. A thrift store might give you a smaller amount of money for the dress, but will buy it from you outright instead of making you wait until it sells to get the profits. It's a good idea to try to bring the dress to a thrift or consignment store around spring or fall before homecoming and prom season. You might also try selling the dress online to avoid a middleman taking a cut of some of the profits. If you would rather donate the dress, look into organizations and charities that take formal dresses and donate them to women and girls in need.
I hope that no matter what you decide to do with your dress you are happy with your final decision and don't let your money go to waste by letting your dress sit in the closet.  Style it up, make it fab and most importantly make it yours.  If worse comes to worse and you actually got a dress that no matter what you do to it, you simply can't make it better.  Remember it is okay to not wear it again, and just give it away or sell it.
